From Spain to Portugal: A Quick Peek at Rest Stops

Crossing the Border: A Quick Look at Portuguese Rest Stops

After traveling through Southern Spain, we crossed the border into Portugal. I will briefly introduce Portuguese rest stops.

First Impressions of a Rest Stop in Portugal

Unlike the toll-free roads in Southern Spain, we encountered toll highways in Portugal. Perhaps because of this, the Portuguese rest stops were noticeably cleaner and more organized compared to the roadside rest stops we had seen in Southern Spain.

Rest stops marked with the green Colibri (hummingbird) logo were generally well-maintained. Unlike those in Southern Spain, which often required a significant detour from the main roads, Portuguese rest stops were conveniently accessible directly from the highway, similar to rest stops in Korea.

Inside the Rest Stop

These rest stops mainly offered simple snacks and drinks, along with ice cream vending machines. Communicating in English with the staff at the counters proved somewhat challenging. We ended up purchasing only basic drinks and snacks.

A large snail clinging to the rest stop window caught my attention. I was so fascinated that I momentarily forgot about the journey and just watched it. The scene gave off an eco-friendly vibe, adding a unique charm to the experience.

Inside, there was plenty of seating, and I was pleasantly surprised to see power outlets and USB ports at every table. It almost made me want to charge my phone, even though the battery was still sufficient.

The restrooms were clean and well-maintained. What caught my eye was the innovative design at the sink, where the water faucet, soap dispenser, and hand dryer were all integrated into a single unit. This thoughtful setup not only made the process seamless but also helped prevent water from dripping onto the floor, keeping the area tidy.

Concluding Thoughts: A Small Discovery

Many people visit Southern Spain and Portugal during Europe's winter months for the relatively mild weather. While some travel by plane, others, like us, prefer road trips. One advantage of a road trip is experiencing different road environments compared to those in your home country. If you ever have the chance to visit a rest stop abroad, comparing it to those in your own country can be a fun and unique experience.

What unique features have you encountered at rest stops you've visited? Small episodes like these can enrich your travel memories. :)
